Stara Planina or Balkan mountain is the biggest mountain in Eastern Serbia and as such it is part of much larger mountain massif called Balkan Mountain stretching all the way to Black Sea through Bulgarian territory. The whole peninsula was named after this mountain massif which by the way forms a natural border with Bulgaria. The highest peak is called Midžor and it is 2169 m high. Second highest peak is called Babin Zub (Grandmother’s Tooth) due to its characteristic appearance. It is a natural treasure of exceptional importance and it is protected by the Government with a status of protected nature’s park.
Stara Planina spends almost five months a year under snow cover, at heights, between 1100 m and 1900 m, making high quality alpine skiing possible. As such, Stara Plalnina is one of the largest and most important ski centers in Serbia, aimed in particular at lovers of snow sports and quality skiing in the midst of immense beauty and untouched nature.
Mountain is crisscrossed with numerous creeks and small rivers descending from higher ground and creating wonderful waterfalls along the way: Tupavica, Bigar, Cungulj…, just to name a few.
