Legendary Kosovo battle in 1389 marked the turning point in Serbian history. It meant Turkish occupation that lasted as far as XIX century. These five centuries were arguably the biggest ordeal in Serbian history. Back then, Serbia served as military camp/field on which battles were fought between Ottoman Muslims and European Christians. Unfortunately, only few monuments of Ottoman architecture survived until present.
Five centuries of Turkish occupation followed. Serbs struggled to preserve their national identity and finally managed to create modern Serbian state as late as XIX century.
