Migrations

Migrations

Serbs took part in unsuccessful Austrian attempt to chase away Turks from The Balkans in late 17th century. Turkish revenge that followed resulted in Serbian transmigration that ended as far north as town of Szentandre near Hungarian capital of Budapest. Serbian Orthodox Church authorities that led the people, stopped at town of Sremski Karlovci near Novi Sad in today’s Vojvodina Province. This picturesque little town became center of Serbian diaspora as Austrian Emperor Leopold granted special privileges for Serbian migrant colony.
