Captain Misa’s Edifice is the most beautiful example of 19th century family palace in Serbia and a vivid testimony of upcoming trading class. Misa Anastasijevic was born in town of Porec on Danube River Island that does not exist anymore due to constant flooding. He grew up as an orphan and has struggled ever since early childhood. When he married, he became Prince Milos’ personal secretery’s brother in law and soon after Misa became Milos’ Court main supplier. Salt trading in Romania brought him personal wealth and a nickname as he became the biggest ship-owner on the lower Danube River. Misa Anastasijevic donated his palace to the state as his plan of bringing his son in law (Karadjordje’s grandson) on power failed. Today it serves as Belgrade University’s headquarters.
